The Gallery in Mt. Shasta welcomes the 7th Annual Forgery Show of 2019
Each year since 2013, Spring welcomes “The Annual Forgery Show” by the group known as Art Roster. This year we are pleased to announce the 7th Annual Forgery Show of 2019 at a new location: The Gallery in Mt. Shasta in the Black Bear Building. This limited-time show will feature local artists depicting works of expertly-executed reproductions in oil of world-renowned masterworks. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd from 4-7pm.
ArtRoster is an art atelier group who work their craft, at the base of Mt. Shasta, under the tutelage of painter Aleksander Balos. He instructs them in techniques from the Old Masters’ atelier system of the European classical and impressionistic painting schools as well as more contemporary methods. Most of the group has enjoyed art making in a variety of media for many years, and within the last few years their love of painting has brought them together creating, exploring and exhibiting.
This year’s forged paintings will represent famous works by well-known painters such as: Edward Hopper, CM Coolidge, Millet, Paul Delaroche, da Vinci, Berthe Morisot and others. Contributing art ” forgers” for this year’s show include: Lou Wandro, Suzanne van Summern, Lynda Hardy, Janet Crittenden, Anne McTavish, Karen Copsey, Cindy Corrales, Nancy Schneider, Marga Filip, Ann Jensen, Carl Adams, Jenny Purtle, and Lucinda Macy.
The Annual Forgery Show had its beginning in 2013 when ten separate reproductions in oil of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa were displayed at The Gallery in Mt. Shasta. Since that time the show traveled to the Pence Gallery in Davis, CA where Kevin Dupzyk, assistant editor with Popular Mechanics, saw the exhibit. He wrote an article “In the Presence of Greatness? – An improbable trove of masterworks arrives from Mt. Shasta” which ran in the February/March 2017 issue of AmTrak’s magazine “The National”.
As the story goes, the article was read by a prominent architect in New York City. From that, the foundation was laid for a future exhibit at Morris Adjmi Architects in New York City in September of 2017. Several of the artists of ArtRoster attended the show–thus fulfilling their “fifteen minutes of fame”. These dedicated artists meet each week in Mt. Shasta where they continue to learn their craft and engage each other with inspiration and camaraderie. Often a person will enter the art studio and comment on how fantastic the pieces are and comment: “I could never do that; I can’t even draw a stick figure.”
Then several months will pass and that same person will be enrolled in the class. With diligence and guidance, they too are soon producing fantastic oil paintings! The ArtRoster artists express their gratitude to Lesa Michel and The Gallery for hosting the Annual Forgery show. We hope you will join in supporting this group of local talent at the opening reception on Tuesday, April 2nd from 4-7pm. The show runs through Friday, April 5th at The Gallery in Mt. Shasta (in the Black Bear Building), located at 201 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd., Mt. Shasta, CA.
The History of the Annual Forgery Show
The Forgery Show is an annual art exhibit featuring the work of Mt. Shasta’s Atelier painters. Each year, members of the group will each execute a copy of a famous masterwork. The Annual Forgery Show began four years ago in 2013 when ten separate reproductions in oil of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa were displayed at The Gallery in Mt. Shasta. Since then the number of participating artists has increased, as well as the variety of masterworks represented.
